Klimt before Klimt – his work in Romania. The permanent works painted at Peleș Castle by the young man who would become the leader of the Viennese avant-garde, Gustav Klimt, and his collaborators, Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch, are brought closer to art lovers in Romania in the new documentary exhibition “Gustav Klimt and the Künstler-Compagnie at Peleș”. Realized at the initiative of the Austrian Cultural Forum, the exhibition curated by researcher Dr. Antonela Corban presents and explains in detail several essential paintings of the Romanian and European heritage, accessible or too fragile to be shown as such to visitors of the Peleș National Museum, and which will never be able to leave the walls of the Castle. The project can be seen between October 8 and November 2 in the Temporary Exhibition Halls of the Peleș National Museum (Aleea Peleșului 2, Sinaia). The texts and photographs on the panels are complemented by the video-documentary “Gustav Klimt and the Künstler-Compagnie at Peleș”, made especially for this occasion by director Carmen Lidia Vidu. The project is the result of the collaboration of the Peleș National Museum with the Austrian Cultural Forum and the “Un concept Luna” Cultural Association, in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute and the MINA Museum. The official sponsor of the exhibition is the Romanian Commercial Bank.

The exhibition will be officially opened on October 16, at 1:30 p.m., during a special event, in the presence of the curator, Antonela Corban, the management of the Peleș National Museum, the director Carmen Lidia Vidu, as well as HE Ulla Krauss-Nussbaumer, the Ambassador of Austria to Romania, and representatives of the Romanian Commercial Bank. The opening will be followed by a four-hand piano recital, performed by Remus Henning and Eduard Gheorghiță.

Created between 1883 and 1886, the youthful works created in Peleș by the Klimt brothers and Franz Matsch, reunited within the artistic collective "Artist Company", are less known to the Romanian and European public, but as valuable as the famous mature creations of Gustav Klimt, existing in the great museums of the world. The present exhibition is intended to contribute to the efforts of the Peleș National Museum to make better known the works of these great Austrian artists who adorn one of the reference architectural monuments of Romania, works that have been classified in the "Treasure" category of the national cultural heritage.

The exhibition takes as its starting point the volume Gustav Klimt and Künstler-Compagnie in Peleș (Ed. Junimea, Iași, 2024), which Antonela Corban developed following a research spanning several years, in collaboration with the Peleș National Museum. The collection here has a special importance, because "it is the most successful of all the achievements of the three artists from the same period, having the largest number of works, with a unified theme, iconography and style of creation. And, equally, because it comes to complete the overall picture of Klimt's work, by joining some youthful plastic compositions, existing on the territory of our country, to those of maturity, which are so well known and appreciated and which have reached not only European cultural spaces, but also museum collections in America or Japan", says Antonela Corban, the curator of the exhibition. The Peleș paintings are an important link in the overall picture of Gustav Klimt's work, whose youthful creations are sometimes overlooked, although they embellish landmark buildings in Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia and other countries.

The exhibition is accompanied by a short documentary film "Gustav Klimt and the Artist- "Company at Peleș" made by the well-known theater and film director, Carmen Lidia Vidu (along with two other renowned visual artists – Sabina Costinel, image, editing and animation, and Julien Javions, sound). The film explores in detail the creations of the three Austrian artists at Peleș, explained by the exhibition curator, research. dr. Antonela Corban, and the Director for Heritage of the Peleș National Museum, dr. Mircea Alexandru Hortopan.

After November 2, 2025, the Gustav Klimt and Künstler-Compagnie Exhibition at Peleș will travel around the country.
