History of Pelișor Castle

Castelul Pelisor, iarna

Pelisor Castle, winter

Pelisor Castle was opened to the public in February 1993. The museum, with an inestimable value, which includes a historical, a memorial and an artistic value, constitutes an important component of the cultural heritage of the Romanian people. This building is an integral part of the vast architectural ensemble created by King Carol I in the valley of the Peles stream, in a period that overlaps practically his entire life lived in Romania. In parallel with Peles Castle, the Knights' House, the Commissariat, the Guards' House, the Architects' House, the Garden House were built nearby, and later, between 1899 and 1902, Pelisor Castle, a gift offered by King Carol I to the heirs.

The chief architect of Pelisor Castle, Karel Liman, respected the client's requirements for the exterior architecture, with elements "Half-timbered" but also adding Romanian elements, which give the building a cheerful touch: the two towers covered with colored sandstone tiles, like the church steeples in Bucovina.

Regarding the interior architecture, K. Liman used, undoubtedly at the request of Princess Maria, along with elements of "Art 1900", Romanian elements: specific niches of the Prahova Valley, the division of space by using Brancovan elements, the amplification of functionality by dividing the space horizontally. Because, through the gradual understanding of the nature of the Romanian people, with whom she came to identify like no other royal personage, Maria understood the necessity of including the function  "national" in the royal residence.

The interior decoration, designed by Maria in different periods, 1902 – 1903 and 1925 – 1928, illustrated her belief in beauty. In the moral testament addressed to "To the Romanian Country and People"The queen confessed:  "If all beautiful things remind you of me, I will be fully rewarded for the love I have borne you, because for me beauty was a creed."

Maria's daring artistic endeavors did not have, like Carol I, civilizing or exemplary claims; they were the manifestation of her nonconformist spirit, open to the new, desiring freedom.

Dormitorul de aur

The Golden Bedroom

Like the Cotroceni Palace, the Pelisor Palace will experience several stages of decoration, which will illustrate the evolution of Queen Maria's feelings and taste. From "the golden nests", where the crown princess, wounded by the real world, could take refuge to dream away from the cruel reality, to the severe purification of lines, to the geometricism of the Modern Style or to the inclusion of elements of Romanian art in her personal style, artistic expression of the Queen's identification with the pains and joys of the Romanian nation. This is the reply that"Queen of all Romanians" he gave it, years later, to King Carol I and his unwavering Germanness.

Pelisor Castle reveals, through its interior decoration, the romantic, mysterious, daring personality of Queen Maria, promoter of a new and unusual art, because the style she chose for it "dream house" is "Art 1900".
