For King Carol I, the collection of weapons was from the very beginning more than a simple hobby; he gradually laid the foundations of the most important collection of this kind in Romania. With a total of more than 4 000 pieces of historical, documentary and artistic value, from court or parade weapons to military or hunting ones, the collection represents the spectacular experience of 600 years of European and Oriental history, with weapons and armors dating from 14th to 20th century.
The exhibition in the Armory Halls of the Peleș Castle has been made since the time of King Carol I, taking account of the provenance of the pieces. Thus, European weapons from Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, France, Poland, Hungary, are exhibited in the large Weapons Room and in the Hunting Weapons Room, and in the Small Weapons Room and the Moorish Hall Oriental weapons are exhibited, most of them dating from the period of the Ottoman Empire. Hierarchizing them according to the main typologies, the collection includes personal defense weapons (armor, helmets, helmets and shields), white offensive weapons (swords, swords, daggers, stilettos, maces, spears, halberds, axes, crossbows, etc.), firearms (arquebuses, rifles, pistols) and accessories (saddle ladders, hunting horns, lanterns, hunting quivers, powder cases, cartridge cases, etc.), some of them bearing the marks of famous armories such as: Solingen, Toledo, Saint-Étienne, Peter Danner, Lazzaro Lazzarini, Lazarino Cominazzo, Johann Ernst Moritz, Markus and Caspar Zellner, Domenico Bonomino, Gabriel Chinel, Franchetti Minelli, Diego Esquibel, etc.
